Born in Manchester in 1960, John Richmond grew up in a city defined by raw energy, creativity, and a powerful musical
undercurrent. Immersed from an early age in a culture where music, attitude, and style were inseparable, he developed a
distinctive vision that would later become the foundation of his aesthetic language.
In 1979, John moved to London to study at Kingston Fashion School, graduating in 1982. London in the early 1980s was a
melting pot of cultural experimentation, where fashion, music, and nightlife merged into a bold new identity. The
post-punk movement was redefining self-expression, and publications such as The Face and i-D were shaping a new
global visual culture. This environment profoundly influenced John's creative approach, grounding his work in
authenticity, rebellion, and individuality. It was "Swinging London" once again, but with a sharper edge and a rawer
attitude.
Immediately after completing his studies, John launched his own label, quickly gaining international recognition and
earning placement in some of the world's most influential fashion boutiques. His work resonated strongly with a global
audience, particularly in Japan, where the brand experienced rapid expansion and strong cultural relevance.
In the late 1980s, John opened his first flagship store in Soho, London, establishing a creative hub that naturally attracted
musicians, artists, and stylists. The space became a meeting point for cultural icons and innovators, reinforcing the
brand's deep connection with music and contemporary style. During this period, John also introduced the second line
"Destroy", inspired by street culture and sportswear, capturing the spirit of a new generation and further expanding the
brand's creative universe.
As the brand evolved, John embraced an international vision, developing strategic collaborations that strengthened its
global presence. While production was established in Italy, the creative heart of the brand remained firmly rooted in
London, a city whose music, street culture, and attitude continue to define the brand's DNA.
In the early 2000s, John Richmond denim made its runway debut in Milan, marking a defining moment in the brand's
history. The RICH jean quickly became an iconic statement, recognized for its bold attitude and distinctive identity,
cementing the brand's position on the international fashion stage.
John Richmond's creative vocabulary is deeply influenced by the music that shaped his youth. From the glam rock of David
Bowie and Roxy Music to the punk energy of the Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks, through the atmospheric depth of new wave
and the elegance of the new romantic movement, music has always been a central pillar of his design philosophy. For
John, sound and style exist in constant dialogue, each informing and elevating the other.
This fusion of musical heritage and luxury craftsmanship defines the John Richmond aesthetic: a continuous tension
between rebellion and refinement, heritage and innovation, provocation and elegance. Rather than drawing on nostalgia,
John uses these influences to create a contemporary narrative, one that reflects a society in constant motion and
transformation.
The mantra "Destroy, Disorientate, Disorder", encapsulates John's creative philosophy. It is a call to challenge convention,
disrupt expectations, and remain in perpetual evolution, principles that continue to guide his work
today.
John Richmond is not driven by trends.
He creates culture.
