Heresy

HERESY is a brand, run by two long time friends and collaborators, we produce seasonal clothing collections influenced by the research and exploration of Folklore. Based in South London, the brand launched in 2012.

As well as clothing we make handmade art objects, produce events, program a music project, and print small-press publications. We collaborate with a broad variety of people and organisations, including breweries, museums, galleries and musicians.

Our main area of interest is in Folklore, it is a vast topic and we've made projects covering an eclectic selection of its sub-sects, from post-punk industrial music, to Alpine village dances, to river goblins.

When producing a collection usually we start by finding an area of folklore we want to explore, whether there is a graphic element we find interesting, or some narrative we want to follow. We try and make sure the graphics and the cut and sew pieces have some kind of dialogue with each other, and that the collection has a common theme/concept that runs through all of it. 

As the brand has progressed, our interest in folklore has also become an exploration of British identity.

Britain is going through a weird time at the moment and there are a lot of negative connotations surrounding the idea of Britishness. Part of what we're experimenting with is excavating positive things about British culture that people might be unaware of, and finding a way of presenting them in a contemporary context.
