Emilia Mala is a London-based contemporary fashion brand, launched in 2017, known for its exquisite range of printed silk scarves. Anna Tuomaala, the Designer behind Emilia Mala, named the brand by combining her middle name and end of her surname. The brand’s objective is to offer a contemporary twist on the classic silk scarf by infusing it with a dark aesthetic and elegance, creating vibrant, hand-drawn print expressive stories that reimagine this timeless accessory.
The intricately illustrated prints often draw inspiration from themes such as consumerism, hedonism, spiritual wisdom, and female empowerment, telling atmospheric visual stories through the use of symbolism and a surrealistic style. The brand quickly gained a loyal consumer base and expanded into numerous stores across the UK and internationally, including Harvey Nichols and the Design Museum in London.
Finnish-born Anna studied womenswear at Ravensbourne College (BA) and Central Saint Martins (MA). She has extensive experience working on ready-to-wear collections with multiple brands in London and Antwerp, as well as with swimwear and lingerie at Agent Provocateur. Additionally, she has consulted for several start-up brands. All prints for Emilia Mala are based on Anna's hand-drawn illustrations.
Emilia Mala has since expanded its range to include Ready-to-Wear and Swim/Bodywear collections. These collections blend elements of sportswear with evening wear, blurring the lines between Ready-to-Wear, Swimwear, and accessories exploring the space between beach and the city.
Emilia Mala is committed to sustainability, using fully biodegradable, recycled, and upcycled dead-stock materials sourced from fabric mills. The swimwear is crafted from Econyl, a lycra made entirely from ocean waste. The scarves are produced in England and Italy, specifically in the world-renowned silk district of Lake Como.
