Katharine Hamnett and Jonny Banger in conversation with Steff Yotka, editor-in-chief, i-D
Join us at the magCulture Shop for a special celebration of issue 377 of i-D magazine. Newly appointed editor-in-chief of the magazine, Steff Yotka, will sit down with British fashion icon Katharine Hamnett and artist Johnny Banger to discuss their shared creative connection rooted in British protest fashion and slogan T-shirts.
Hamnett’s first slogan T-shirt, 1983’s CHOOSE LIFE came to fame worn by Wham!’s George Michael, and set the tone for a series of tees protesting against US nuclear weapons in the UK and the destruction of our environment. Printed in huge, black, sans-serif type on loose white shirts, the messages were designed to spread the word. ‘It was about putting ideas into people’s heads,’ she told Freize magazine, ‘You can’t not read the slogans.’
Our three guests will discuss the way the tees established a new language of protest.
After the talk, buy a unique edition of the brand new issue of i-D, and enjoy a drink courtesy of our friends at El Rayo Tequila. Tickets are very limited—please register on Eventbrite to book your place.
